The Kassel III correctional facility was an independent prison with facilities in the greater Kassel area . The building is also called "Elwe" which means the number eleven in the North Hessian dialect and arose from house number 11 on Leipziger Strasse.

Originally, their locations were attached to today's Kassel I JVA as branches. However, it was created with effect from April 1, 2001 as an organizationally independent penal institution through the outsourcing of all branches. The so-called "Elwe" was closed at the end of 2009 due to the urgent need for renovation, and the D wing in the Kassel I JVA was rebuilt for the purposes of pre-trial detention. The prison for women in Kaufungen, previously assigned to JVA III, was assigned to JVA I. The building has been used by an event agency as an event location since 2011.

The head office was the so-called "Elwe" at Leipziger Strasse 11. It was a remand prison for adult men and a deportation center , in addition to that, up to 16 structurally separated cells were used to accommodate young men. In addition, there was a collective transport point for prisoners "on push" (now in JVA Kassel I).

The current three-story brick building in a U-shape was completed in 1876; a prison, the so-called “ Stockhaus ” of the Prussian administration (demolished at the beginning of the 1870s), had already been located in the same place . The outbuildings were built in 1906. In 1969, the independent remand prison was incorporated into the Kassel I prison. Damage caused by fires in a revolt by deportation detainees in the summer of 1994 made it necessary to rebuild the work building. The mutiny that took hostages was ended by the GSG-9 .

Due to due renovation work, it was decided on November 10, 2009 to close the "Elwe". The prisoners on remand are now housed in the Kassel I JVA , the Baunatal and Kaufungen branches are administratively attached to them.

Further use

In the years from 2012 to 2014, the Elwe was used by an event agency for various events. During the dOCUMENTA (13) the former prison was used as a hotel, during the soccer world championship 2014 for public viewing and for the obstacle course "Break out and come free".

Since September 2015, the former remand prison has been converted into condominiums. An entrepreneur from Baunatal, together with a business partner from the State of Hesse, had acquired the building complex for 570,000 euros and 50 apartments are to be built here by September 2016. The former prisoner sports hall was acquired by the city of Kassel as a gym for the neighboring elementary school.

Baunatal

The branch establishment established in 1987 on Kirchbaunaer Straße in Baunatal concentrates the open enforcement for Northern Hesse. 118 places are available for female and male prisoners.

Kaufungen

The women's prison of JVA Kassel III was created through the rededication of a youth detention center that was set up there from 1948 to 2000 in the building at Leipziger Strasse 419, which was built in 1916 as a judicial prison . There are 37 places for remand and criminal detention here.
