Buildings and history

The prison facility is directly connected to the Limburg regional court building. The three-story, T-shaped building was built from 1880 to 1883.

At the beginning of the Nazi era, social democratic politicians were imprisoned in Limburg, and during the November pogroms in 1938 , Jewish men were deported from here to Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps. During the Second World War , foreign political prisoners were held in Limburg, who were only released by US Army troops at the end of March 1945.

An extension was built from 1965 to 1968, two workshop wings were built in 1979 and 1980, a new entrance area in 1984/85 and in 1988 a larger free-time courtyard with a small field sports field.

Until 1970, the institution was subordinate to the Chief Public Prosecutor at the Limburg Regional Court and, as a judicial prison, was dedicated to the execution of pre-trial detention, short prison sentences for men and until June 1961 short prison sentences for women.

It has been operated as an independent correctional facility since the beginning of 1971.

In 2013, the Limburg penal institution, the smallest in the country, entered into a partnership with the Diez penal institution , the largest penal institution in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, just three kilometers away .
