The correctional facility Frankfurt am Main I (JVA I) is a penal institution of the State of Hesse , in which pre- trial detention is mainly carried out on adult male prisoners.
The institution is located in the north of Frankfurt am Main in the Preungesheim district , adjacent to the Frankfurt am Main III correctional facility .
history
The correctional facility in Frankfurt am Main I was built on the site of a prison building that was in use until 1997. This complex, which was demolished in 2000, had to be replaced by a more humane new building with more up-to-date security technology. By using as many precast concrete elements as possible , an attempt was made to achieve a cost-effective and quick completion of the building. Construction began in June 2007 and was completed in May 2010. The costs amounted to around 100 million euros. After a test phase, the institution has been in regular operation since August 2011, around 6500 people are detained there every year.
JVA I consists of seven multi-storey buildings with a gross floor area of 41,000 m², including three accommodation buildings with 480 cells for single and 28 for double occupancy as well as several specially secured cells . The transport department with 56 detention places and an infirmary with 34 beds are housed in other buildings, as is the outside guard with visitor rooms and the administration wing . The correctional facilities in Frankfurt am Main I, III and IV are connected to their own combined heat and power plant , and the laundry and large kitchen of JVA III are shared. The approximately 2.4 hectare site is surrounded by reinforced concrete walls up to 15 m high . One of the three free hour yards is secured with a plastic net to prevent prisoners from escaping upwards. More than 380 video cameras are installed on the prison premises .
