Justus Claproth (born December 28, 1728 in Kassel ; † February 20, 1805 in Göttingen ) was a German lawyer and is considered the inventor of recycled paper .

Life

Claproth received his doctorate in Göttingen in 1754 and worked there as a professor and manufacturing judge from 1759, later he received the title of royal British and electoral Brunswick-Lüneburg court counselor.

In 1774 he published a pamphlet entitled An Invention of Making New Paper from Printed Paper . In it Claproth reports on attempts that he had made together with the papermaker Johann Engelhard Schmid (1736–1811) from Klein Lengden near Göttingen in his mill to make new writing paper from printed waste paper. For this purpose, the printing ink was washed out with turpentine oil and washing earth. With this, Claproth introduced the blackening or deinking process into paper technology, even if this was not to become established until centuries later.
