Life

Born in Poland in 1868 into an Eastern Jewish Hasidic family, Lidzbarski studied Semitic Philology in Berlin from 1889 to 1892 . There he converted to Protestant Christianity and changed his first name to "Mark". In February 1896 he received his habilitation in Oriental Philology at the University of Kiel . In 1907 he became a full professor at the University of Greifswald , succeeding Wilhelm Ahlwardt , and from 1917 professor in Göttingen as successor to Enno Littmann . From 1912 he was a corresponding and from 1918 a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

The Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft (DMG) donated the Lidzbarski Medal named after him to honor Semitists in recognition of their life's work; earlier it was also awarded for prize work.

“In Berlin, Kiel, Greifswald and Göttingen Lidzbarski created works of lasting importance. He was active in three areas of science from the Middle East , neo-Aramaic dialectology, Semitic epigraphy and Mandaean philology; and in the latter two areas he was a recognized authority. "
