Justus Friedrich Güntz (* July 21, 1801 in Wurzen ; † July 11, 1875 in Dresden ) was a lawyer , editor and owner of the Dresdner Anzeiger , from whose income he financed a foundation , the Güntz Foundation, in 1856 .

Life

Güntz was the son of the district tax collector Friedrich Christian Güntz. After attending the Princely School of St. Afra in Meißen, he studied law in Leipzig and did his doctorate at the University of Jena. Güntz worked as a lawyer in Dresden from 1825. He was also a city councilor in Dresden from 1836 to 1841.

The baroness von Schlichten, a client of Friedrich Christian Güntz, inherited the advertising privilege of the Dresdner Anzeiger founded in 1730 in 1829 and transferred the power of attorney to Friedrich Christian Güntz. In 1834 he again transferred the powers to his son Justus Friedrich Güntz. He acquired the Dresdner Anzeiger in 1837 and became its publisher in 1839. The Dresdner Anzeiger was an advertising paper and became the official journal of the city of Dresden under his leadership. From 1856 the proceeds of the Dresdner Anzeiger fed the Güntz Foundation established by Güntz . For a short time, Güntz was also the editor of the Dresdner Morgenblatt in 1848 .

He died in Dresden in 1875 and was buried in the family vault on the Elias cemetery. The crypt was badly damaged in the Dresden bombing, reconstructed in 2015 and re-inaugurated on May 31, 2016.

Güntz Foundation

Güntz signed a document in 1856, according to which the proceeds of the Dresdner Anzeiger were to be transferred to a non-profit foundation that was independent of the city's assets. The funds of the Güntz Foundation were to be used exclusively for the purpose of charity and the beautification of the city. The administrator of the Güntz Foundation was the Lord Mayor of Dresden.
