Location in the Sakha Republic

Jutschjugei ( Russian Ючюгей , also Jutschugej or Yuchugey transcribed; Yakut Үчүгэй / Üčugej ) is a place in the east of the Russian republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in north-eastern Siberia. Yutschjugei has 322 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). These are mainly Yakuts and Evens . Furthermore, around 6000 reindeer live in the vicinity of the village (as of 2008). The area is overgrown with five or six meter high larches . The name Jutschjugei means “the good” in Yakut .

geography

Jutschjugei is located about 600 km east of the city of Yakutsk in the highlands of the Suntar-Chajata Mountains and about 35 km southwest of Oymyakon . The place is located south of the Kolyma route . It gained notoriety as the “Road of Death” because around 200,000 prisoners were killed when it was built in Stalin's time .

Jutschjugei belongs to the Ulus Oimjakon and is located about 150 km as the crow flies south-southwest of its administrative center Ust-Nera . The village is the seat of the rural community (selskoje posselenije) Jutschjugeiski nasleg, which also includes the 80 km (94 km by road) west of Kjubeme, which had 30 permanent residents in 2001 and 30 in 2010.

climate

Just like Oymyakon, Jutschjugei is over 2900 km from the North Pole , but is about 200 m higher. In Jutschjugei, too, very low temperatures are measured in winter. Responsible for this are the continental location of the place, the altitude and a wide valley surrounded by mountains that stores the icy air. In contrast, it can get over 30 degrees Celsius in summer, which puts the annual mean temperature into perspective.

Since January 2008 two weather stations of the weather service company Meteomedia have been measuring the temperatures in Jutschjugei. The Dutch weather company MeteoVista BV joined them later with their measurements. Meaningful average temperatures can therefore only be expected in a few decades.
