Károlyné Honfi

Károlyné Honfi (born April 16, 1933 in Budapest as Lujza Gurszky ; † October 10, 2010 there ) was a Hungarian chess player and chemical engineer . There are also variants of her name such as Lujza Honfi or Lujza Honfi-Gurszky , which are related to her maiden name Lujza Gurszky .

Life

She studied at the Technical and Economic University of Budapest , where she received her diploma as a chemical engineer in 1956. From 1956 to 1958 she worked in a cosmetic factory ( Vénusz Kozmetikai Gyár ) and was then laboratory manager in a plastics processing factory in Solymár for two years . From 1959 until her retirement in 1988 she worked in a laboratory at the Hungarian State Railways in the field of materials testing.

In addition to her professional activity and the upbringing of her two children, she dealt intensively with the game of chess . She played continuously for the club Vasútépítő Törekvés Sportkör in Budapest. From 1952 she took part in the Hungarian women's chess championships twenty-nine times in a row, taking first place in 1961 and second place four times (1959, 1963, 1964 and 1968). At the 4th Women's Chess Olympiad in Lublin in 1969 , she won the silver medal together with Mária Ivánka and Zsuzsa Verőci in the team for Hungary. She also took part in correspondence chess Olympiads for women twice. In these, she won a bronze medal in the team for Hungary.

In 1969 she received the title of International Women's Champion (WIM). Her highest rating was 2095 in January 1987.

Her husband Károly Honfi (1930–1996) and her son György Honfi (* 1957) is also a chess player.
