The Käsebrüder or Käsebröder or the uprising of the cheese and bread people ( Dutch Opstand van het Kaas- en Broodvolk ) is the name for an uprising in Kennemerland and in West Friesland (in North Holland), an uprising of farmers and fishermen in 1491 - 1492 , which was triggered by an economic crisis , high taxes and the occupation policy of John III. von Egmond , the governor of Maximilian I. The name of the insurrection comes from the fact that the insurgents carried cheese and bread in their flags.

Supported by the residents of Hoorn , Alkmaar and Haarlem , the villages were occupied by the farmers. The hated mayor Klaas van Ruyven was killed and cut into pieces. The rebels stormed and destroyed two castles. The uprising was put down in 1492 by the troops of the Duke of Saxony Albrecht the Courageous . Alkmaar, for example, had its walls and gates torn down as a result.
