The Glattdeckdampfer Kronprinz was the second steamship in Württemberg on Lake Constance and the first ship built by Escher Wyss for Lake Constance.

history

After the successful start of Lake Constance steam shipping, the Wilhelm was increasingly busy, so that after 15 years, another ship, the Crown Prince, was purchased for relief. The Crown Prince was named after the son of the then ruling king, Crown Prince Karl . With the new construction of the ship, the Zurich company Escher, Wyss & Cie. commissioned, which had already successfully built several ships for Swiss shipping companies on other lakes. The Kronprinz was the first Lake Constance ship built by Escher Wyss, which was to be followed by many more - this shipyard produced most of the bottom sea steamships.

Like Wilhelm , the Crown Prince also mainly served the connections from Württemberg to Switzerland . Charles's coronation as King of Württemberg in 1864 prompted the renaming of the ship to King Karl . Although Württemberg largely surrendered its sovereignty after the establishment of the German Empire in 1871, the railways of all three southern German states and thus King Karl remained under their respective sovereignty. There were therefore no passenger steamers on Lake Constance that sailed under the flag of the Empire. When a new saloon steamer was put into service in 1890, the name King Karl was given to this new ship. The previous king Karl received the name Württemberg . After 64 years of operation, the Württemberg was retired in 1903 and scrapped in 1904, the name of the ship was passed on to her successor ship .
