The Royal Museum of Fine Arts ( Dutch : Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten ) is an art museum in Antwerp . Today's monumental building on Leopold De Waelplaats was built between 1884 and 1890 based on designs by Jan Jacob Winders and Frans Van Dijk and was opened on August 11, 1890. The collection, which consists of 7,600 paintings, shows the artistic developments in Antwerp, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, when the city on the Scheldt was one of the most important art centers in Europe.

Works by the so-called “Vlaamse Primitieven” , Jan van Eyck , Rogier van der Weyden , Dirk Bouts and Hans Memling are shown on the upper floor . Even Quentin Massys , Joachim Patinir , Frans Floris and Marten de Vos as a representative of the Renaissance and Baroque painters such as Peter Paul Rubens , Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens are shown. The Belgian painting of the 19th century is with Nicaise de Keyser and Hendrik Leys , Henri de Braekeleer andJames Ensor present. Non-Belgian masterpieces are represented, for example, by Jean Fouquet , Simone Martini , Frans Hals or Antonello da Messina with his crucifixion .

The ground floor is open to 20th century art with works by Rik Wouters , Constant Permeke and René Magritte .

The museum has been closed for renovations since 2011 and is expected to be closed until early 2022.
