Joachim Patinir (* probably between 1475 and 1480 near Dinant ; † October 5, 1524 in Antwerp ), also Joachim Patinier or Patenier , was a Flemish painter and draftsman .

Life

Little is known about his life. The first reliable mention of the master is that of his admission, in 1515 and immediately before Gerard David , to the Antwerp Guild of Luke . It can be assumed that he made a pilgrimage to Les Baux-de-Provence around 1515/20 . In 1520 he met Albrecht Dürer in Antwerp , whose diary shows that he lent Patinir paints and employed one of his students. In return, Dürer gave him engravings, a drawing and a painting by Hans Baldung Grien . He was also on friendly terms with Quintin Massys (Quentin Metsys, Quentin Matsys), who is mentioned as the guardian of a daughter of Patinir.

Joachim Patinir most likely died in 1524.

The date of death is derived from a document in which Jeanne Nuyts, whom he married on May 5, 1521 in second marriage, is mentioned on October 5, 1524 as the "widow of Joachim Patinir". The Flemish painter Herri met de Bles (1500 / 10–1555 / 60) was probably Patinir's nephew.

Two portraits of Joachim Patinir von Dürer are known, including a silver mine drawing (Weimar, Castle Museum).

He was one of the first artists to paint pure landscape pictures based on the world landscape. His pictures are characterized by fantastic rocks, forests, cities and rivers. Patinir did not study the fantastic rock formations in the great outdoors, but rather on the basis of rocks in the studio. His landscapes often made the figures depicted in them appear dwarfish. In most of his works he uses a scenic event as a “pretext” for the representation of a landscape given from a very high point of view, an early example of the genre of Dutch painting that is called “world landscape”. The themes are mostly Christian , he has portrayed the church father Jerome several times.

Patinir was strongly influenced by Hieronymus Bosch . He worked with Quentin Massys and it is believed that some of the paintings ascribed to Massys or Patinir today are joint works.

His most famous paintings are:
