The Königswald is a passenger ship of the traditional company Weisse Flotte Potsdam in the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam .

history

The Oberspree-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft Tismer & Co., founded in 1894 and based in Niederschöneweide , had four new steamers built by the Johannsen & Co. shipyard in Danzig from 1895 . The 31.70 meter long and 6.40 wide twin screw ships were each equipped with two 90 hp steam engines from the Union foundry in Königsberg . These four ships, which were originally called Neptun , Kyffhäuser , Hewald and Borussia , included the later steamer Potsdam, today's Königswald .

In 1898 the ships were sold to the Spree-Havel-Dampfschiffahrt-Gesellschaft-Stern (SpHDG Stern). Here they were given the names Berlin , Wannsee (from 1934 Dahme ), Grünau and Potsdam . The steamer Potsdam was approved for 352 passengers. Since 1923, the SpHDG Stern formed an economically justified car pool with the Teltower Kreisschiffahrt on the Unterhavel between Potsdam and Berlin. In October 1928 the steamer Potsdam collided with a motorboat in the Sacrower Enge in front of the Heilandskirche and, as it threatened to sink, it was set aground in shallow water. One person was injured and the ship was later lifted and repaired. In the spring of 1934, the steam shipping company merged with the Teltower Kreisschiffahrt to form the Stern und Kreisschiffahrt of Teltowkanal AG. In the 1934 timetable, the shipping company listed 26 steamers, 10 motor ships and 12 motor boats. This also included the steamer Potsdam . After surviving the Second World War almost undamaged, the Soviet Army returned the ship to Stern und Kreisschiffahrt in mid-June 1945 and it was able to commute between the pier at the Stößenseebrücke and the Glienicke Bridge as a replacement for the destroyed railway lines between Berlin and Potsdam from July 21st . At the end of the 1950s, the Potsdam , like other ships, was assigned to the Weisse Flotte Potsdam . As early as the early 1960s, the days of steamships passed in Potsdam and the steamship Potsdam was decommissioned in 1963 and brought to the Genthin shipyard.

In 1969 the motor ship Strandbad Ferch was put into service. It emerged from the disused former steamship Potsdam . The old ship was completely rebuilt and completely changed in its external form. Only two ground segments remained of the old ship. With this trick, as is typical of the GDR, a lengthy and possibly unsuccessful approval process for a new building was circumvented. This construction was realized in the Genthin shipyard on the Elbe-Havel Canal . The Strandbad Ferch was the first passenger ship in the GDR to be equipped with a so-called Z-drive.

In 2002 there was another renovation with the accompanying modernization and new motorization of the ship. After the renovation, it was put into motion under the name of Königswald in Potsdam. It was named after the Königswald , a nature reserve on Lake Sacrow .

The ship

With a length of almost 41 meters and a ship width of 6.11 meters, the ship can navigate almost all of the region's smaller bodies of water, such as the Griebnitz Canal. The shallow draft makes it possible to stick to the planned routes even at low water levels. The ship is approved for 250 passengers. There is seating for 110 people in the fully air-conditioned interior. There are also 160 seats outside on the upper deck. The Königswald is driven by a Deutz AG engine via a Schottel rudder propeller . A generator powered by a diesel engine, also from Deutz, is available on board to provide power. An electric bow thruster improves maneuverability. A galley, a counter area and a service team are available for passenger care, depending on the number of guests and the route area, to provide catering for the passengers.
