The KIT SC Engineers (until August 2013 Karlsruhe Engineers ) are an American football team from Karlsruhe . The team, which was founded in 1990, was originally only accessible to students from Karlsruhe universities, making it one of the oldest university football teams in Germany . Today, as part of a registered association , the engineers are also accessible to non-students and take an active part in German league operations. This makes them one of the few teams in Germany that play along the lines of the American college football system .

The engineers are currently active in the Baden-Württemberg regional league .

history

Karlsruhe Engineers

The Karlsruhe Engineers were founded in 1990 as an American football team for students at Karlsruhe universities. At the same time, the Association for the Promotion of American Football at the University of Karlsruhe e. V., with whom the team has been in close cooperation ever since. As a pure university team, the engineers were not authorized to participate in regular German league operations in the first few years after their establishment , which is why in the first few years they gained experience almost exclusively in irregular friendly matches.

From 1992 the engineers took part in the German University Championships in American Football every year. In 1995 the tournament took place in Karlsruhe for the first time, and in 1996 there was the first victory for the engineers in Constance . In 1997 the team took part in regular German league operations for the first time and ended the season in third place in the Baden-Württemberg State League. In 1999, the title of German University Master was won a second time, this time in front of a home audience in Karlsruhe.

In 2009 the engineers entered into a cooperation with the Badener Greifs , an American football team from Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen . This cooperation offered the Engineers players the opportunity to play in regular league operations alongside the German university championships. The Greifs on the other hand benefited from the additional strength of the team and the great playful potential that the engineers were able to bring in. This cooperation was so successful that the Greifs even got promoted to GFL 2 in 2010 . At the same time, the engineers won the German university championships three times in a row from 2009 to 2011.

From 2010, the engineers placed particular emphasis on promoting young talent through university sports at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) . A trial training session was held at the beginning of each semester, which served as an introduction to a weekly beginners' course in order to enable the students to get into the sport as easily as possible.

Incorporation into KIT SC

After the German University Championships were won in Karlsruhe for the sixth time in 2013, which made the Engineers record holders, the cooperation with the Badener Greifs was ended in June 2013. The engineers subsequently joined KIT SC, the sports club at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). This step offered the team the decisive advantage of being part of a registered sports club and being able to participate in regular games as a separate team. Furthermore, the KIT SC presented itself as a young, dynamic and university-related association as the ideal partner for the engineers. Another change also occurred in the team structure, since from this point on only students and employees of the Karlsruhe universities could no longer become members. In spite of this, the team remained strongly student-oriented in the period that followed.

First head coach of the KIT SC Engineers was quarterback Felix Bleimund. As a newly founded club, the Engineers had to start in the lowest league, the Baden-Württemberg District League, in their first year . Because of the large squad and the experience of many players in the second division, all eight games were won with a large margin in the first season, which meant that they were promoted to the Baden-Württemberg state league. In addition, the German University Championships in Paderborn could be won again.

2015 turned out to be a similarly successful year for the engineers. After a large part of the squad could be retained, the team also impressed in the Landesliga-Baden-Württemberg and was able to secure promotion on the last matchday after eleven wins and one defeat. The decisive victory developed into a show of power, as the direct competition for promotion, the Neckar Hammers, could be beaten 42-0 in their place. This year, too, the engineers managed to defend their title as German university champion at the tournament in Hamburg.

In 2016, the Engineers competed in the Baden-Württemberg Oberliga. After Felix Bleimund had to leave Karlsruhe for professional reasons, Falco Böllhoff was introduced as the new head coach. Böllhoff had previously coordinated the team's defense with Bleimund and was still active as a player in addition to his coaching work. The Engineers were able to finish the season after ten wins and two defeats again as first in the table, with which the team succeeded in direct promotion to the Baden-Württemberg Regionalliga. The engineers were also able to confirm their supremacy in university sports when they achieved their fourth victory in a row and their ninth overall victory at the adh-Open American Football in Mannheim.

2017 also turned out to be a successful year for the team. As a climber in the Regionalliga Südwest you could finish the season in third place. In the ten games in the league, there were a total of seven wins to celebrate.

In the 2018 season, the Engineers were in first place in the table at the end of the first half of the season. On the ninth game day they had to admit defeat to the Biberach Beavers at home with 24:43, whereby the Beavers took the lead. The Engineers finished the season in second place with an 8: 4 balance.

Previously, after a one-year break, the adh-Open American Football had already taken place in Karlsruhe in April. Here, the engineers were able to prevail against their guests from Hamburg and Paderborn on two days of the tournament, whereby the title of German university champion went to Karlsruhe for the fifth time in a row and for the tenth time in total.

After the Biberach Beavers had been promoted to GFL 2 , the Engineers, together with the Albershausen Crusaders, who had been relegated the year before, went into the 2019 season as favorites. The championship was also communicated as a clear season goal from within the team. These ambitions were already dampened on the first day of the match when the Engineers had to admit defeat in Albershausen without their injured starting quarterback Jonas Lohmann. At the end of the season there was a rather disappointing record with six wins, one difference and five defeats as well as a place in the table in midfield.

Promotion of young talent

Since 2010, the engineers have placed great emphasis on promoting young talent. In the meantime, the team offers both beginners and advanced training through Karlsruhe University Sports. In the beginner training, the basics of American football are brought closer to the students, with the training being carried out completely without equipment. The advanced training then offers the opportunity to play with full contact for the first time.

The engineers get a further boost through their youth program. Since 2013, the team has had a U19 and a U17 youth team, which were able to successfully participate in regular game operations in 2014–2016. Since 2015 there has also been a flag football team in which children aged 9-14 can play the low-contact version of American football. In spring 2016, the first tournament took place in Karlsruhe, attended by teams from Weinheim, Tübingen and Ostalb.
