The Košarkaški klub Šentjur is a Slovenian basketball club from the town of the same name Šentjur pri Celju in Lower Styria . The club's men's team celebrated its greatest successes in the recent past with winning the title in the Slovenian championship in 2015 and participating in the supranational Adriatic Basketball League (ABA-Liga) and the continental FIBA Europe Cup competition in the following season. The team established in 1969 within the Partizan sports association operates under the sponsor name Tajfun .

history

The club goes back to the men's team founded in 1969 in the sports association TVD Partizan , which already four years later in 1973 reached the second-highest regional league of the then SR Slovenia . Another ascent failed several times, instead the club had to leave this league in 1991. But with the independence of Slovenia and the entry of the sponsor Kemoplast , the rise of the association should be possible again in the following years. After reaching the Slovenian B league again in 1994, in 2000 they were promoted to the highest Slovenian league. There you could establish yourself, although you only reached places in the second half of the table in the 14-team league, which played a relegation round after the main round.

In the 2005/06 season, the team reached the championship round of the best six Slovenian teams for the first time, but only managed one victory in ten other games. After a seventh place in 2007, the team slipped again in the 2007/08 season under the new name sponsor Alpos from the circle of the now again eight teams in the championship round. After ninth place in 2008 and eleventh place in 2009, Alpos was able to improve to fourth place in the 2009/10 season in the championship round with a balanced record. In the play-off semi- finals, however, they remained without a win in two games against defending champions and record champions KK Union Olimpija from the capital Ljubljana . Without a name sponsor Alpos, a ninth place followed in 2011 and a sixth place in 2012, when they did not win in the six-team championship round.

Also with the new name sponsor Tajfun they were sixth again in 2013 when they won three out of ten games in the championship round. In the 2013/14 season only the eleventh and penultimate place followed. In the 2014/15 season, the team again reached the play-offs in fifth place in the championship round, which had been expanded to include a quarter-finals. After the team had defeated the fourth and regional rival KK Zlatorog Laško in two games , they could surprisingly defeat the first and defending champion KK Krka in two games, so that they reached the final series unbeaten. In a best-of-five series, they lost a game against the other surprise team KK Rogaška , but thanks to final MVP Dragiša Drobnjak they won the championship for the first time after three wins.

After the championship, KK Tajfun also competed in international club competitions for the first time in the 2015/16 season. In the FIBA Europe Cup 2015/16 it was enough in the first group stage to two wins over a non-competitive Irish selection, but after four defeats in the other group games they were eliminated early. Even in the supranational ABA league 2015/16 they were only competitive to a limited extent. After only seven wins in 26 games, they finished 14th and last. In the final round of the Slovenian championship, there was no new play-off run; sixth in the championship round, the defending champion lost at the start of the play-offs in the quarter-finals directly against record champions Union Olimpija. This means that KK Tajfun will no longer take part in an international competition for the following season.
