The KMG Klinikum Sömmerda is an acute hospital based in Sömmerda, Thuringia, and a hospital with regional (intermediate) care. It belongs to the private health group KMG Kliniken SE.

history

On April 24, 1922, the Sömmerda city council decided that the preparation facility built in 1893 on Bahnhofstrasse should be converted into a hospital. So far, the city of Sömmerda only had a so-called "old hospital", which was housed in a building on Marktstrasse. The hospital was inaugurated and handed over on January 14, 1923, with a total of 34 hospital beds, which were no longer sufficient due to the increasing population of the city of Sömmerda. As a result, an extension was built between 1937 and 1938, whereby the two old buildings were combined with the new building to form one building complex. This construction was originally intended to be the first of two further construction phases, but this was no longer carried out due to the war and post-war events. With the extension, the Sömmerda hospital now had around 100 beds, which made it necessary to employ a chief doctor .

The post-war situation made it necessary to increase the bed capacity from 100 beds to 166 beds due to overcrowding in the hospital rooms and occupancy of almost all functional rooms. In order to be able to set up more beds, a private building was leased, which was in the immediate vicinity of the hospital and was set up as an internal infirmary with 32 beds. As a result of the district reform in the GDR in 1952, Sömmerda received the status of a district town, which meant new tasks for the institution that had become a "district hospital". The growing number of inhabitants made it necessary to improve medical care by specialists and to create an outpatient facility. Since the capacities were still insufficient, the city council at the time decided to set up a new internal department in the low-rise style on the premises of the hospital, which could alleviate the urgent need for beds. In 1960 the city council approved another extension, which began in 1961.

Other urgent capacities were accommodated in it, including a bed wing, a laundry, a heating system, new kitchen rooms, new laboratory and X-ray rooms and much more. It was also decided to completely rebuild the old building and build a new central area. In order to improve medical care , it was decided to combine the three hospitals, Buttstädt , Kölleda and Sömmerda, to form the Sömmerda district hospital. On October 6, 1976, a new extension building for the hospital was ceremoniously handed over at the Sömmerda hospital site. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Buttstädt division was spun off from the hospital and transferred to the DSK senior citizens' home. The DRC National Association Thuringia finally decided in 1999 to take over the hospital Sömmerda in its ownership. Since 2001 the DRK Manniske Hospital Bad Frankenhausen, the DRK Hospital in Luckenwalde and the DRK Hospital Sömmerda have merged to form the DRK Hospital Society Thuringia Brandenburg gGmbH, to which the DRK Hospital in Sondershausen has also belonged since 2008. In 2008, the newly built ward block (section A) with the emergency center, an outpatient operating theater and three wards with beds was inaugurated. The second construction phase, with a new operating theater, delivery room, pediatrics and various functional areas, was opened in 2012.

In 2018, the DRK non-profit hospital company Thuringia Brandenburg mbH applied for insolvency proceedings at the district court of Mühlhausen due to payment difficulties. On March 18, 2019 announced that the hospitals of the previous carrier in Bad Frankenhausen, Sondershausen , Sömmerda and Luckenwalde by the KMG clinics to be transferred.
