Contacts-Контакты eV - Association for contacts to countries of the former Soviet Union is a non-profit association with humanitarian goals. A partnership of the association in the field of pediatric oncology arose out of a help for the victims of the power plant disaster in Chernobyl , which improves the therapy for children with leukemia in a multicenter study. The association also supports surviving victims of the Nazi regime, including former Soviet soldiers in German captivity .

The association was founded in 1990 under the name "German-Soviet Contacts". The current chairman is Gottfried Eberle, and the association's founder, Eberhard Radczuweit (1941–2017) , was the honorary managing director for many years . The association's advisory board includes personalities such as Peter Jahn , Jutta Limbach , Lothar C. Poll , Hilde Schramm and Wolfram Wette .

Goals and Activities

One of the goals of the association is, among other things, the material and ideal recognition of the suffering of Soviet prisoners of war in World War II . To this end, he actively campaigns for survivors in the successor states of the Soviet Union .

More than half of the approximately 5.7 million Soviet prisoners of war had died in German prisoners of war , concentration or forced labor camps as a result of the Nazi regime's racial and conquest policies. The German Wehrmacht and other agencies deliberately violated the Geneva Conventions and other international regulations in the treatment of Soviet prisoners . The survivors, most of whom suffered massive physical and psychological damage, were, in some cases, massively discriminated against after their return to the Soviet Union. The association works closely with numerous organizations at national and international level. One example is the “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” foundation . Together with the German-Russian Museum Berlin-Karlshorst , the association published books including letters from former Soviet prisoners of war. These are also used as teaching material. The association also designs and organizes exhibitions on the subject.

In 2006, the association sent a petition to the German Bundestag with the aim of recognizing the so-called "Russian camps" of the Wehrmacht as places of detention whose inhumane conditions were comparable to those of concentration camps. The association did not receive an answer to this petition. The association submitted a second petition entitled “Reparation of National Socialist injustice - Recognition of the injustice suffered by Soviet prisoners of war in German prisoner-of-war captivity” in February 2014 after the topic was raised at the beginning of the year, among other things because of the speech by Bundestag President Norbert Lammert on the Holocaust - Remembrance day on January 27, 2014 in front of the German Bundestag again reached the media. The petition corresponded to an application by the parliamentary groups of the SPD and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in June 2013, which had been rejected by the governing coalition at the time. The proposal is supported, among others, by the Berlin historian Wolfgang Benz .

Since 1991, the association has been funding the multicenter study “Moscow-Berlin-Protocol” (ALL-MB) for patients who are affected by the most common childhood cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Initially over 90% of ALL patients died in the Soviet Union, today the probability of survival is 80% of the 700 children with leukemia who are treated according to the MB protocol each year. After evaluating around 3,000 ALL-MB patient data from previous MB therapy protocols, a new design of the "Moscow-Berlin Protocol" for the purpose of therapy optimization is to be adopted in November 2014 at a conference of all 50 onco-hematological centers in Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Armenia become.

Among other things, the association brought together German and Russian teachers and students for "democratic education" in East and West as a prerequisite for a humanistic society . In 1998, a partnership between Kontakt-Контакты eV and the Moscow State Experimental School " School of Self-Determination " began. He also maintains other cultural exchanges. Since 2013 he has been supporting Peter Jahn's initiative to set up a memorial site for the victims of the Nazi habitat policy in Berlin.

In 2018/19 the association runs the Memory-Wiki project - On the trail of the memory of "forgotten" Nazi victims in Ukraine, Russia and Germany in cooperation with the University of Bremen, the National University of Dnjepropetrovsk "Oles Honchar", the Southern Federal University of Rostov-on-Don and the Higher School of Economics in Moscow.
