The Kahle Winter Hazel or Kahle flowers hazel ( Corylopsis glabrescens ) is a large, bright yellow flowering shrub from the family of hamamelidaceae (Hamamelidaceae). The natural range of the species is in Japan. It is sometimes used as an ornamental shrub.

description

The bald hazel is a shrub up to 6 meters high with bare shoots. The leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The stem is 1.5 to 3 inches long and thin. The leaf blade is simple, 3 to 8 centimeters long, broadly ovate, suddenly pointed, with a heart-shaped base and a dentate leaf margin with bristly pointed teeth. Up to twelve pairs of nerves are formed. The underside of the leaf is blue-green and initially sparsely star-shaped.

The inflorescences are 2 to 3.5 centimeters long spikes and a more or less bare inflorescence axis. The basal bracts are reddish green; the bracts of the individual flowers are shiny downy and hairy. The light yellow petals are 7 to 8 millimeters long. The stamens are purple to yellow, the stylus green. The bald hazel flowers in April. The fruits are bare and 6 to 8 millimeters thick.

Occurrence and location requirements

The natural distribution area is in Japan on the islands of Honshū (middle and west side), Kyushu and Shikoku and in the south of the Korean peninsula . The bald hazel grows in cool, moist forests on well-drained, fresh to moist, acidic to neutral, sandy or gravelly humus, moderately nutrient-rich soils in light to partially shaded locations. The species tolerates warmth and is usually frost hardy . She avoids soils with a higher lime content .

Systematics

The bill Kahle hazel ( Corylopsis glabrescens ) is a kind of the genus of corylopsis ( Corylopsis ) in the family of hamamelidaceae (Hamamelidaceae). There it is assigned to the tribe Corylopsideae in the subfamily Hamamelidoideae. Adrien René Franchet and Paul Amédée Ludovic Savatier first described the species in 1878 . The generic name Corylopsis is derived from Corylos , the generic name of the hazel , and from the Greek word "opsis" for "appearance". It corresponds to the German name Scheinhaseln and refers to the similarity of leaves and inflorescences with those of hazelnuts. The specific epithet glabrescens comes from Latin and means "balding".

use

The bald hazel is rarely used as an ornamental shrub because of the decorative and fragrant flowers and the impressive autumn colors .
