Kai Niebert

Kai Niebert (born September 15, 1979 ) is a German sustainability researcher and professor for science education and sustainability at the University of Zurich .

Life

Kai Niebert is the son of two secondary school graduates . After two semesters, he dropped out of medicine and studied biology , chemistry and politics from 2001 to 2006 for teaching at grammar schools at Leibniz University in his hometown of Hanover . There he did his doctorate in 2010 with the topic Understanding Climate Change - A theory-led and evidence-based development of learning opportunities to convey climate change.

During his work as a research assistant at Leibniz University with research stays at Curtin University in Perth and Penn State University , he accepted the professorship for didactics of natural sciences at Leuphana University Lüneburg in 2012 .

Kai Niebert has been Professor of Science Didactics and Sustainability at the Institute for Educational Science at the University of Zurich since 2014 and continues to be a visiting professor at Leuphana.

In June 2018 Kai Niebert was appointed a member of the Commission for Growth, Structural Change and Employment of the German Federal Government. The commission ended its work in January 2019. Niebert was largely responsible for reaching a compromise and commented on the result of the commission's work, alluding to the federal government's inaction: "Even poor climate protection is better than no climate protection at all."

In June 2019 Kai Niebert was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the German Federal Environment Foundation .

Niebert's scientific focus is on environmental education , sustainability and climate change .
