history

The Friends of Nature Association in Mödling built a wooden viewing platform for the first time on the Eschenkogel, which was officially opened on July 28, 1878. It was given the name Sofienwarte, named after Sophie von Todesco , who supported the association's Anninger Fund. In 1896 the association was a new fund established with goal for the 50th jubilee of three members of Emperor Franz Joseph I to be able to build a new observatory. After the 10,200  crowns had been successfully raised, construction could begin in 1898. After a preliminary ceremony on July 2, 1898, the actual inauguration and opening ceremony took place the next day, including the laying of the keystone of the three-story iron construction and a substructure .

In 1998, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary, the control room was renovated. The wooden panels on the steps and the platform were replaced by grid panels and the metal structure was repainted.

Due to massive damage to the foundation and the steel structure, the control room was closed in 2019. Since renovation would be too time-consuming and expensive, the control room is to be demolished.
