The Wilhelmswarte is a ten meter high stone observation tower at 675  m above sea level. A. high summit of the Hochanninger , the highest point of the Anninger in the municipality of Gaaden in the Vienna Woods . The listed building ( list entry ) is a geodetic benchmark .

history

The “Friends of Nature Association” in Mödling , founded in 1877, built various new observation towers, including the ten-meter-high Julienturm on Höllenstein in 1880 and the 25-meter-high Kaiser Jubilee Observatory on Eschenkogel. An eight meter high, wooden viewing platform was built on the summit of the Hochanninger. The grandstand, named after Archduke Wilhelm , a sponsor of the association, was inaugurated on July 28, 1878, but was replaced after just under ten years because it was dilapidated. The Julienturm on the Höllenstein served as a model for the new stone control room. According to plans by master builder Martin Breyer , a keep-like observation tower with a round floor plan and an ogival entrance portal was built. According to the inscription on the tower, construction began in 1886. On July 10, 1887, the 1000  guilders expensive observation tower was opened. At the beginning of 2010, the famous inscription " Kyselak " appeared on the platform at Wilhelmswarte .

architecture

The round tower is made of stone masonry and has an outer diameter of five meters. Due to the sloping terrain, eight stone steps lead to the entrance gate and inside an iron spiral staircase in 31 steps to the viewing platform. The platform is eight meters high. The total height of the tower including the stair tower is ten meters.

Immediately next to the observation tower are four 90 × 90 cm large concrete foundations with concreted screws, which probably come from a former radio tower with a floor plan of 3.9 meters during the Second World War .

outlook

The summit of the Hochanninger has been cleared since April 2011 and the control room is completely free again, as it was during construction. In the north, the transmitters on Kahlenberg and Exelberg and the high-rise buildings north of the Danube in Vienna can be seen well. The radio tower on Vierjochkogel can be seen very well. To the east and south you have a good view over Gumpoldskirchen , Traiskirchen , Baden and Bad Vöslau . The Sonnwendstein , the Schneeberg and the Hohe Wand rise behind it .
