Kaiwaka is a village in the Kaipara District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

Kaiwaka is located east of Kaipara Harbor and around 17 km north-northwest of Wellsford . It is around 16 km to the east coast. The Kaiwaka River flows in a westerly direction through the village, merges with the Wairau River to form the Otamatea River , which in turn flows into Kaipara Harbor .

history

During the musket wars at Te Ika-a-ranga-nui near Kaiwaka in February 1825, a military conflict between the Ngā Puhi and the Ngāti Whātua with over 170 dead took place.

Kaiwaka became a center of trade in the late 1850s and gained some economic importance. When the logging of kauri trees and the extraction of kauri resin came to an end at the end of the 19th century, the region switched to dairy farming and founded the Hakaru Dairy Company in 1902 .

From 1895 the poor road conditions of the Great North Road from Auckland to Whangarei , which led through Kaiwaka , began to be improved and in 1900 the worst sections between Kaiwaka and Whangarei were paved with gravel. The North Auckland Line railway reached Kaiwaka in March 1913 despite difficulties with the site. The beginning of the First World War meant further delay so that the route did not get far beyond Kaiwaka until the early 1920s .

In the 1940s, the Lands and Survey Department opened up large tracts of land that were distributed to soldiers returning from the war in the early 1950s.

population

In the 2013 census, the village had 579 inhabitants, 7.3% more than in the 2006 census.
