belonged to the Rodney District until October 2010 |
Wellsford is a town in what is now the Auckland Council on the North Island of New Zealand . The city belonged to the former Rodney District until the end of October 2010 , which was subordinated to the newly formed Auckland Council on November 1, 2010 as Rodney Ward .
Origin of name
The name of the place is said to have been formed from a local tradition from the first letters of the settler families of the region: Watson, Edger, Lester, Levet, Simpson, Foster, Oldfield, Ramsbottom and Dibble .
geography
The city is located around 17 km northwest of Warkworth and around 65 km north-northwest of downtown Auckland , northeast of the Whanaki River , which flows around 11 km southwest into the Tauhoa River and this into the Kaipara Harbor . The New Zealand State Highway 1 runs through Wellsford and connects the city with Warkworth in the southeast and with the city center of Auckland in the south and connects with Whangarei to the north . In the city, the New Zealand State Highway 16 branches off to the southwest and connects Wellsford with Helensville, about 43 km away .
history
Settlers arrived from England in the early 1960s and settled in Port Albert on the Kaipara Coast , about 10 km west of Wellsford . These settlers named themselves after Albert von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha , the husband of Queen Victoria " Albertlanders ". They were a split from the Anglican Church looking for a new place to settle. However, not many of the settlers arrived in Port Albert and they found it difficult to make a living here. The majority of the Albertlanders therefore moved on to more fertile areas inland and founded the Wellsford settlement .
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 1698 inhabitants, 1.6% more than in the 2006 census.
