Warkworth is a small town in what is now the Auckland Council on the North Island of New Zealand . The city belonged to the former Rodney District until the end of October 2010, which wassubordinated tothe newly formed Auckland Council on November 1, 2010 as Rodney Ward .
geography
The city is located around 20 km north of Orewa , around 17 km southeast of Wellsford and around 51 km north of downtown Auckland , directly at the deep cuts of the Mahurangi River into the country. The river flows into Mahurangi Harbor a good 3 miles southwest of Warkworth town center . The nearest town is the coastal town of Snells Beach on Kawau Bay , about 6 km southeast of Warkworth . The New Zealand State Highway 1 runs through Warkworth and connects the city with Wellsford in the northwest and Orewa and with downtown Auckland in the south.
history
In the city's cemetery there is a tombstone on which the British John Anderson Brown is mentioned as the founder of the city. Brown was a native of Warkworth , Northumberland , England , and moved to the Warkworth area in 1843 , followed by his brother a year later. Together they built a dam on the town's river, built a sawmill and delivered timber to Auckland for over 10 years . After extensive planning and surveying work and the purchase of 62 hectares of land, Brown finally founded the place in 1853 and named it after his hometown. Some streets in the city were later named after well-known families from his hometown in England.
From the 1850s onwards, cement was produced in Warkworth . Later known as Portland Cement , the factory began producing high-quality cement from 1865, renaming the company to John Wilson and Company Ltd in 1903 and Wilsons Portland Cement Company Ltd in 1907 , and from 1914 the cement was exported to Australia . After a merger with another company and the company's relocation to Whangarei , the Warkworth factory closed in 1929. The ruins of the buildings and former parts of the facility can still be viewed.
population
In the 2013 census, the city had 3,909 inhabitants, 19.5% more than in the 2006 census.
economy
Fruit and vegetables are preferred to be grown in the outskirts of the city, and poultry farms can also be found there. In the city itself there is a cheese dairy and some technical operations.
Attractions
- The Warkworth Museum is well worth a visit, with the 8.4 hectare Parry Kauri Park behind it , which houses an over 800 year old Kauri tree .
- New Zealand's most important ground station for satellite communications is located around 3.5 km south of the city.
- Scenes from the 1985 film The Quiet Earth (The Last Experiment) were filmed on the site of the satellite communications station.
Events
The city's annual Kowhai Festival is one of the largest civic festivals in the country and lasts for a full week each spring. The festival culminates in a large family celebration with lots of fun and entertainment, horse shows, music, food and wine. For this, the entire main street of the village will be closed in order to provide enough space for the tens of thousands of visitors. The day ends with a large parade of the various groups and clubs in the area.
Town twinning
Warkworth has twinned relationships with five twin cities around the world. After the incorporation of the Rodney District in the Auckland Council , the question arose whether the Auckland Council would take over the relationship with the city or whether it would remain with Warkworth municipality . The status of community-led affiliations was agreed :
- Warkworth , Northumberland , United Kingdom , hometown of city founder John Anderson Brown .
- Warkworth , Northamptonshire , United Kingdom ,
- Warkworth , New South Wales , Australia
- Warkworth , Ontario Canada , became a twin town in 2003.
- Furudono (Fukushima) , Honshū , Japan , Furudono is the partner school of the Warkworth-based Mahurangi College and Primary School.
