Kaj Hoernle (* 1960 in the USA ) is an American geologist , petrologist , geochemist and university professor .

Scientific career

Kaj Hoernle graduated from Richmond Academy High School in Augusta , Georgia , USA in 1978 . In 1982 he received his undergraduate degree ( BA ) in geology from Columbia University , New York City . He received his Masters in Petrology from the University of California , Santa Barbara in 1987 . In 1990 he received his Ph.D. in geochemistry from the University of California. Between 1990 and 1991 he worked there as a scientist following his doctorate. From 1991 to 1993 he practiced this position at the University of California , Santa Cruz . From 1993 to 1994 he worked in research as a research assistant and lecturer at the Marine Sciences Institute and Dept. of Geological Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has been employed in Germany since 1994 and initially worked until 2003 as a professor in the field of petrology and geochemistry at what was then the GEOMAR research center for marine geosciences in Kiel . Since 2004 he has been doing the same job for IFM-GEOMAR and since 2012 for today's GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . Since 2006 he has been a member and principal investigator of the Kiel Cluster of Excellence " The Future Ocean ".

Selected research interests

Kaj Hoernle is interested in the age, geochemistry and origin of intraplate volcanism as well as the spatial and temporal development of subduction zone magmatism. He is also interested in ophiolites , changes in the ocean crust and the opening and closing of maritime passages and land bridges.
