The Kakisa River is a left tributary of the Mackenzie River in the Province of Alberta and the Northwest Territories of Canada .

The river is namesake of the Kakisa formation , a stratigraphic unit of the western Canadian sedimentary basin .

The Kakisa River has its origin in the extreme northwest of Alberta in the 570  m high Creighton Lake . It flows in a westerly direction, briefly entering the area of the Northwest Territories, but then returning to Alberta. Two miles east of the British Columbia border , the river then turns north and flows into the Northwest Territories. It maintains its course to the north or northeast and runs parallel to the Redknife River for a while . The Kakisa River then turns east and forms a complex system of lakes and canals before flowing into the west end of Tathlina Lake . He leaves this again on the north bank and continues his course north and reaches the south bank of Kakisa Lake . The Kakisa River leaves the lake at the municipality of Kakisa on the north bank. It now overcomes the Lady Evelyn Falls , is then crossed by the Mackenzie Highway and finally reaches the Mackenzie River at its outlet from the Great Slave Lake .
