description

Vegetative characteristics

Kalanchoe alternans is a perennial , completely bald rosette plant that - including the inflorescence - reaches heights of stature of 50 to 75 centimeters. Their roots are thickened. Its stem-round, fleshy shoots have a diameter of 10 to 12 millimeters at their base and are only slightly branching. The mostly densely packed, fleshy tough leaves are sitting to almost sitting. Their pale pinkish-beige to reddish, broadly ovate or lanceolate leaf blades are 2.5 to 12 inches long and 1 to 6.5 inches wide. Its tip is pointed to blunt, and the base is narrowed. The leaf margin is usually whole or slightly notched.

Generative characteristics

The paniculate, little flowered inflorescence is very loose and up to 30 centimeters long. The hanging or splayed flowers are on 5 to 30 millimeter long flower stalks . The green-yellow calyx is reddish towards the tip, the calyx tube 0.2 to 0.8 millimeters long. The narrow, triangular to lanceolate, pointed, spreading calyx tips are almost free. They are 4 to 10 millimeters long and 1 to 2.5 millimeters wide. The corolla is greenish, yellowish, pinkish red, reddish green, cream colored or white. The four-edged corolla tube , enlarged at its base, is 12 to 16 millimeters long. Their elliptical, lanceolate or oblong lanceolate, pointed and curled corolla lobes are initially suddenly bent back and then upright. They are 6 to 18 millimeters long and 1 to 4.5 millimeters wide. The stamens are attached to the tip of the corolla tube and do not protrude from the flower. The anthers are egg-shaped. The linear nectar flakes have a length of 2.8 to 4.5 millimeters. The carpel has a length of 9 to 11.5 millimeters. The stylus is 3 to 5 millimeters long.

Systematics and distribution

Kalanchoe alternans is common in Saudi Arabia and Yemen in dry and exposed locations, on stony soils, rocky slopes, and grassy hill slopes at altitudes of 1,800-2,900 meters.

The first description by Christiaan Hendrik Persoon was published in 1805. A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Kalanchoe alternans var. Alternans
  • Kalanchoe alternans var. Lanceolata Raadts
