history

Kalifornsky was first mentioned by the US Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1916 . There are two different theories about the origin of the place name. Either it was derived from "Kali", the Dena'ina Athabasque term for fishermen , or it comes from a Dena'ina Indian who worked in Fort Ross , California from 1812 to the 1820s .

Peter Kalifornsky, who was born in the village in 1911, was the last speaker of the Lower Cook Inlet dialect of the Dena'ina.
