Fifth station on the Way of the Cross in Ahrweiler

The Kalvarienberg Ahrweiler is a way of the cross in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler . It was built on the initiative of Count von Blankenheim , who, on his return from the Holy Land in 1440, found numerous similarities between the area around Ahrweiler and the places of his pilgrimage.

The first chapel of the Calvary is mentioned in 1502. The crucifixion group with the statues of Our Lady of Sorrows , John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene has been preserved with the exception of the latter and is now outside the church . The first way of the cross was built from 1440 and represented the seven falls under the weight of the cross. A sandstone relief that is exhibited today in the Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler Municipal Museum goes back to this first Via Crucis (= way of the cross).

According to the ordinance of Clemens XII. , which fixed the number of Stations of the Cross at 14, it was decided in 1732 to build a new way with wayside shrines donated by wealthy Ahrweiler families.
