Ernst Klimt (born January 3, 1864 in Baumgarten near Vienna (today part of Vienna's 14th district ); † December 9, 1892 in Vienna-Penzing, then 13th, now 14th district ) was an Austrian history and decoration painter.

Life

Ernst Klimt was born on January 3rd, 1864 as the third of a total of seven children of the Bohemian gold engraver Ernst Klimt the Elder. Ä. (1834-1892) and Anna Rosalia Klimt born. Finster (1836–1915) was born in what was then the western suburb of Baumgarten near Vienna. He had a normal childhood in what is now the 14th and 7th district of Vienna (Burggasse 47) under very modest circumstances.

From 1877 Ernst Klimt attended the Vienna School of Applied Arts of the Imperial and Royal Austrian Museum for Art and Industry, like his older brother Gustav Klimt since 1876 . Ernst and Gustav were students of Ferdinand Laufberger (1829–1881), a very successful painter and decorator from the Vienna Ringstrasse era in the 1870s, who was very committed to his students. For example, he established contact between the Klimt brothers and Hans Makart and thus helped them both to participate in the execution of the procession in honor of the silver wedding anniversary of the imperial couple .

In 1881 the Klimt brothers (Ernst and Gustav) and their school friend Franz Matsch (1861-1942) founded a studio community called an artist company and two years later they ran their own studio in Vienna 6th, Sandwirtgasse 8 (it appeared in Lehmann's Vienna address book in 1888 -1890 on). From 1891 on, the studio address of Compagnie 8., Josefstädter Straße 21, appears (they worked in the garden pavilion of the house opposite the theater in der Josefstadt ). The company designed, among other things, curtain and ceiling paintings for the theaters in Reichenberg , Karlsbad and in 1885 in Fiume , 1885 ceiling paintings in the Vienna Hermesvilla , 1886–1888 the ceiling frescoes in the two staircases of the new Burgtheater and in 1891/1892 the spandrel and intercolumn pictures in the staircase of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna .

Ernst Klimt's biggest commissions also included five ceiling paintings in Mondsee Castle and works for the Romanian royal palace Peleș in Sinaia (Romania).

In 1891 Ernst Klimt married Helene Flöge , the sister of Gustav Klimt's friend Emilie Flöge , who soon afterwards gave birth to a daughter named Helene.

In July 1892 his father Ernst Klimt died at the age of 59. Ernst Klimt Jr. died unexpectedly on December 9th of the same year of an inflammation of the pericardium. After the death of his brother, Gustav Klimt took on his widowed sister-in-law Helene and his niece Helene. He completed the unfinished paintings by his brother.

The company broke up after Ernst Klimt's death, but Gustav Klimt only became estranged from Matsch around 1900, when Matsch's faculty pictures were well received, while Klimt's were heavily criticized.

Ernst Klimt was buried in the Baumgartner Friedhof , group T, grave no. 1929. His father was previously buried in this grave, and in February 1915 his mother, Anna Klimt, who died at the age of 79. The grave still exists today. The former grave cross was designed by Gustav Klimt and made by Georg Klimt .
