Kaly Live Dub is an electronic Dubband or Dubstepband that in 1995 in Lyon was founded.

history

Kaly Live Dub began in the mid-1990s as a classic roots reggae band under the name Kaly Calipso . In 1998, Kaly Calipso released the Maxi Orange Dub . Shortly thereafter, the band's style changed to electronic dub, the singer switched to live sampling, the drummer left the band (and now plays at High Tone ). Style-forming influences on the band were Amon Tobin , Square Pusher , Herbalizer , Jah Shaka , Portishead , Aba Shanti I and Massive Attack . In connection with this change in style, the name of the band changed to Kaly Live Dub . The band continues to distinguish itself as a real live band. The first EP as Kaly Live Dub 1.4 kHz and the first album Electric Kool Aid were released in 2001.

Between 2000 and 2002 Kaly Live Dub played many live performances and improvised together with bands such as Zenzile , High Tone , Svinkels, Les Hurlements d 'Léo, Good Ridance and others. a. With Encounter 1 and as Kaltone came out in 2003 recordings of collaborations with other musicians such as the famous Jamaican singer Rod Taylor and the band High Tone. Kaltone was the beginning of a series of collaborations between the band High Tone and befriended musicians.

In 2002 the second album Hydrophonic was released . In the same year Pilah, the guitarist of the group, founded the Lyons collective Dub Addict Sound System as a platform for musicians and to spread dub in the style of Jamaican sound systems.

The 2004 released Maximal 3 Overdubs is a compilation of the tracks of the EPs Encounter 1 , Encounter 2 , 1.4 kHz and a few other tracks, Kaly Live Dub went on a big tour. That same year, Uzul toured with his side project Hybrid Sound System , which fused drum and bass with electronic dub .

Keyboardist Bernard "2TT" Pelmoine left the group in 2005, and Thibault Louis joined the group. The band's sound is strongly influenced by drum and bass, very psychedelic and interspersed with samples of traditional African , Indian and Berber music. The album Repercussions was released .

In 2006, On Stage was released as a DVD album and a double live CD. For the songs How To Be Late and Curious , Kaly Live Dub brought in trumpeter Erik Truffaz , who added a touch of trip-hop jazz to the band. Stylistically, the sound of the album is a mixture of dub / reggae, techno, speech samples and samples of Far and Middle Eastern music. The different influences are so closely interwoven that the music is difficult to assign to a particular genre. The songs often have a surprising dramaturgical structure.

The album Fragments followed in 2008 . Harder beats, many language samples and keyboard parts are woven into complex structures on carpets made of dub and dubstep structures. Kaly Live Dub founded a new dubstep-heavy tendency in French dub at the same time as High Tone , Zenzile , Brain Damage and Ez3kiel .

In 2010 the album Lightin 'The Shadows was released, which shows clear influences of dubstep , but still contains samples of traditional non-European music. The first part of the album, titled Shadows , contains dark compositions, the second part, called Light , rather lighter ones. The piece Wackies pays homage to the New York producer Bullwackie.

In 2010 the album Lightin 'The Shadows was released on the Jarring Effects label. The band's sound is a synthesis of dub, reggae, dubstep, techno and hip-hop. The album is featured by Biga Ranx and K The I ??? .
