The Kambar-Ata Dam ( Kambar-Ata Project , sometimes also known as the Kambaratinsk Dam ) in Kyrgyzstan on the Naryn River is a partially under construction complex of two individual dams belonging to the Kambar-Ata 1 and 2 hydropower plants . So far only the construction of Kambar-Ata 2 has been partially completed; the realization of Kambar-Ata 1 is still pending.

Kambar-Ata 1

The construction of the Kambar-Ata 1 dam is currently frozen at an early stage. When completed, the dam will be one of the largest dams in the world, measured by the structure volume of 112.2 million cubic meters and also at a height of 275 meters. The storage space of the reservoir is also considerable with 4560 million m³. With an output of 1940 MW, the associated hydropower plant is to make a considerable contribution to the energy supply of Kyrgyzstan.

The construction of a dam at this point was originally planned since the 1970s. Construction began in 1986, but was discontinued after 1991 due to the collapse of the Soviet Union . In preparation for Kyrgyzstan's accession to the Eurasian Economic Union in 2015 , a contract was signed with the Russian power plant operator RusHydro to carry out the construction and construction work was resumed in 2013 with the first test drillings.

Due to the Russian economic crisis , however, RusHydro announced in December 2015 that it would not be able to carry out the construction and the contract was canceled again. The future of power plant construction is therefore again unclear. The Kyrgyz government is currently trying to attract investors to finance the further construction.

The construction of the Kambar-Ata 1 hydropower plant has repeatedly been the subject of tension with the neighboring state of Uzbekistan on the lower reaches of the Naryn , which fears for the security of the water supply for the densely populated Fergana Valley and its water-intensive cotton production .

The dam is to be built from bulk earth and stone. The most voluminous dam in the world, as is occasionally written, it is not. In Argentina two much larger ones are under construction: Chapetón and Pati . However, the “Syncrude tailings dam” is considered to be the very largest .

Kambar-Ata 2

The Kambar-Ata 2 dam lies below Kambar-Ata 1 and is much smaller, with a dam height of 60 m and the planned total output of the power plant of 360 MW.

Construction also began in 1986. After being hired in 1991 due to the collapse of the Soviet Union , he was reinstated in 2007. The plant has been partially in operation since 2010, initially with a single turbine with an output of 120 MW. The construction and expansion to the planned total output of 360 MW is still pending. As part of the contract with RusHydro for the realization of Kambar-Ata 1, the completion of Kambar-Ata 2 was originally planned. After the termination of the contract in December 2015, implementation is open again.
