Chamber Opera Frankfurt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kammeroper Frankfurt is a free opera ensemble in Frankfurt am Main , which was founded in 1982 by the director Rainer Pudenz .

history

After Pudenz had initially worked as an assistant director in Freiburg, Stuttgart and Essen, 1982 saw the birth of the chamber opera under his own direction with the opera Pimpinone by Telemann . The hallmarks of chamber opera productions are the use of satirical and comical means and “unconventional, relaxed music theater far from stiff stage dogmatics.” In order to reduce the fear of thresholds and to make the opera tangible as a total work of art of language and music, the Frankfurt Chamber Opera performs all operas in the tradition of Walter Felsenstein in German, which has meanwhile become a unique selling point in the local opera landscape. The aim of the performances is to provide the audience with "an artistic, sensual experience, direct access and pleasurable experiences with these musical works of art". The Frankfurt Chamber Opera has brought out more than 85 productions since it was founded, including several world premieres. In 2019, Julija Domaševa was the first woman to conduct the Frankfurt Chamber Opera in Gioachino Rossini's opera Die verkehrte Braut .

Productions

One focus of the productions is the opera buffa , as it was shaped by Rossini , Donizetti , Mozart and Bizet . Occasionally, cheerful fare such as Singspiele and operettas by Offenbach or Lehar is presented or, especially in recent years, dramatic operas by Verdi , classic-modern such as Stravinsky ’s Story of the Soldier ”or, in the spirit of discovery, contemporary commissioned compositions. Composer in residence is the internationally renowned Italian avant-garde Andrea Cavallari . The chamber opera premiered four of his works in Frankfurt, including “La strada della vita” (based on the Fellini film “La strada”) and a newly composed version of “Winterreise”. As a rule, two to three productions appear per year, including a large-scale production in summer.

ensemble

As an independent opera house, the Chamber Opera does not have a permanent ensemble. However, there is a base of singers who have participated in many productions over the years, such as the sopranos Ingrid El Sigai , Dzuna Kalnina, Petra Woisetschläger and the bass Bernd Kaiser. The costume designer Magarete Berghoff has been part of the core of the chamber opera since it was founded. Her poppy-surreal designs have had a decisive influence on the style of the productions and their public perception. Many young artists have presented themselves in the chamber opera in recent years, who now sing and play in state theaters or in houses such as the Vienna State Opera , the Graz Opera or the Komische Oper Berlin . An average of 60 to 70 participants are involved in the major summer productions of the Frankfurt Chamber Opera. The more intimate winter / spring productions come on stage with 10–15 participants.

Frankfurt venues and guest performances

The Frankfurt Chamber Opera does not have a permanent venue, even if the large-scale summer productions have meanwhile become firmly established as open-air performances in the Frankfurt Palmengarten. Since its inception, the chamber opera has been looking for venues that use the genius locii for the respective opera. These included B. the hall of the Finkenhof, the Naxoshalle , the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm , the Unitarian consecration hall and the Cantate hall. In total, their productions were shown at over 20 different venues in Frankfurt. The chamber opera has also made numerous guest appearances at home and abroad, for example in the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio, in the Walkenried monastery , the Heidelberg castle ruins , the Bad Hersfeld monastery ruins , the Teatro della Compagnia and the Barghello National Museum in Florence, the Theater am Ebertplatz in Oberhausen and the Wilhelmsbad Castle in Hanau.

It has long been planned to build a permanent house for the Frankfurt Chamber Opera in the Sachsenhausen factory. A foundation was set up specifically for this purpose.

Cooperation projects

The Frankfurt Chamber Opera also works with other artistic institutions or genres, for example in 2013 with the Willy Praml Theater for the project “Passion.Osterfest auf Naxos.” The Praml play “Jesus D'Amour” with Poulenc's monodrama “ The human voice ” and a string quartet by Andrea Cavallari, which was composed especially for this purpose, merged into a total work of art. Another focus of the cooperative activities of the chamber opera is to get children and young people interested in opera in schools. In 2011 there was a cooperation with the Kinderzeit-Schule in Schwalbach and in 2015/16 a cooperation with the special education Albrecht-Strohscheinschule in Oberursel, both on Mozart's "Magic Flute"
