The battle for Shyrokyne was a battle that lasted from February 2015 to July 2015 over the village of Shyrokyne, located on the Sea of Azov in Donetsk Oblast , Ukraine . The struggle developed within the framework of the war in Ukraine since 2014 between Ukrainian troops and troops fighting for the internationally unrecognized Donetsk People's Republic . The fighting violated the Minsk II agreement , which calls for a ceasefire.

prehistory

On August 24, 2014, Ukrainian troops came under artillery fire on the border with the Russian Federation near Novoazovsk , around 18 kilometers east of Schyrokyne. Russia's main battle tanks and armored vehicles, supported by insurgents, forced the Ukrainian troops to retreat. Observers were convinced that the vehicles could only have penetrated into Ukraine from the territory of the Russian Federation and that the city could not be shelled with the usual artillery systems from the known rebel positions in Ukraine. The advance was only stopped within reach of the port city of Mariupol . During the September 5 armistice, the front was dangerously close to Mariupol.

In January 2015, the ceasefire between Ukraine and anti-government forces collapsed, after which Ukraine lost the airport in the Second Battle of Donetsk Airport. These hostilities violated the Minsk Protocol and were condemned internationally. The rebel militias, supported by Russian units according to the Ukrainian side, also launched a new offensive on Debaltseve and captured it on February 16, 2015. At the same time, an offensive by Ukraine took place near Mariupol after a rocket attack on the port city on January 24, 2015, killing 30 civilians.

The fight

When the Ukrainian troops launched an offensive along the coast on February 10, 2015 , Andrij Bilezkyj , commander of the Ukrainian right-wing extremist Regiment Azov , announced that the Ukrainian troops had captured several villages, including Shyrokyne. According to Ukrainian sources, the anti-government troops attacked the village of Schyrokyne with heavy artillery.

At the end of March 2015, the OSCE reported that 60% of Shyrokyne had been destroyed by the fighting.

On April 2, 2015, OSCE observers reported that, contrary to the Minsk agreements, the anti-government troops in Shyrokyne were using heavy military equipment. On April 14, 2015, a Russian journalist was seriously injured in a mine in Shyrokyne. On April 16, the anti-government forces announced that they controlled most of Shyrokyne.

At the end of April, the OSCE reported that the most violent fighting in Shyrokyne since February 2015 had been recorded. On May 30, some of the remaining civilians in the village came under fire from snipers . One resident was killed and others injured. The joint attempt by the Ukrainian and Russian generals in the OSCE observer mission to arrange a cease-fire to recover the corpse initially failed.

In mid-June 2015, the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko visited Mariupol.

After prolonged fighting and heavy fire with heavy weapons, from which the civilian population in particular suffered and which destroyed 80% of the houses and infrastructure, the VRD troops evacuated the remaining residents and evacuated the place in early July 2015. According to the Azov regiment, the place was evacuated not because of an agreement, but because of losses. After an inspection of the site by OSCE representatives, Russian and Ukrainian representatives and VRD personnel, the OSCE confirmed the withdrawal on July 5.
