history

During the Indonesian occupation of East Timor , several support groups for East Timor were formed in Canada . The Canadian government did not recognize the annexation of East Timor by Indonesia, but largely tolerated it. In 1996 there was upset between Canada and Indonesia when Bella Galhos , an East Timorese resident in Canada, accused the Indonesian ambassador to Canada Benjamin Parwoto (1994–1997) of threatening her mother and telling her that her daughter should be quiet. The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs therefore expected an explanation from Indonesia. Official representative of the Conselho Nacional de Resistência Timorensein Canada the student was Abé Barreto Soares .

When the United Nations dispatched the International Armed Forces to East Timor in 1999 to end the wave of violence in the country and to regulate the withdrawal of the Indonesians, Canada took part in it, as well as in UNTAET and its follow-up missions until 2012. Canada also supported East Timor in establishing the administrative and government structures. Both states are members of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).
