Statistics Canada (English name), because of the Canadian bilingualism also equal. Statistique Canada (French name), is a Canadian federal agency that publishes statistics on the Canadian population, natural resources, economy, society and culture. It is called StatCan , which is also the official abbreviation. The Economist magazine and the Public Policy Forum regularly rate the agency as the best organized in the world.
tasks
In addition to statistics for the whole of Canada, the agency also publishes statistics for the individual provinces and territories. The total number is 350. In addition, the authority organizes a national census every five years (in the first and sixth years of a decade) . The census data can then also be viewed on the Internet.
history
The authority emerged in 1971 from the Dominion Bureau of Statistics founded by George Eulas Foster in 1918. The first statistical Boehors in Canada date back to 1841.

Definitions
The agency defines several definitions to determine the Canadian regions for statistical purposes:
- Census agglomeration: Metropolitan regions with a core city that has more than 10,000 but less than 100,000 inhabitants
- Census Metropolitan Area: Metropolitan areas with a core city that has more than 100,000 inhabitants
- Census Division : comprises different administrative units of a province
- Census Subdivision: further subdivision ie:
- City , Hamlet, Indian reserve , Indian settlement , region and town (nationwide) as well as in the individual areas
