Canal festival dates
The Canal Festival (" Fest am Kanal " until 2017 ) was a nationally important cultural event in Datteln .
General
It has taken place annually since 1969 on the first weekend in September, then on the penultimate weekend in August, lasted three days and has had over 100,000 visitors in each of the last few years. The canal festival was initiated by the long-time mayor (1967–1992) of the city, Horst Niggemeier . The festival was intended to make dates more popular using its status as the largest canal hub in Europe. In this PR context, the hit song Come to the Dattelner Kanal (sung by Sven Olsen & the Equilis) and the Dattelner Kanalwasser , a clear Westphalian grain, were also produced. In fact, tens of thousands of visitors from all over the Ruhr area and Münsterland soon came to the Canal Festival. In addition to a fair and show events with fireworks on the canals on Saturday evening, there was a large marquee in which popular hit stars such as Heino , Cindy & Bert , Lena Valaitis and others performed.
In 1994 the municipality of Datteln, which had previously organized the festival, ran into a budget deficit which prevented it from continuing the festival. First they agreed on the end of the festival. But when a sponsor was found, eight associations in the city decided to set up a channel festival interest group to finance the festival. This was accompanied by a change in character and it became more of a music and cabaret festival.
In 2009 the 40th Canal Festival took place from August 14th to 16th. Special attractions were the performances of the bands Donots , The Animals and pop singer Olaf Henning .
The festival area stretched at the Dattelner Hafen on both sides of the Dortmund-Ems Canal .
The last canal festival then took place in 2017. The channel festival interest group, an amalgamation of several associations that most recently organized the channel festival together, decided not to hold the festival any more and dissolved. The reason given was, in particular, the increasing costs for security and regulatory measures, which at the same time could no longer be absorbed due to the increasingly difficult sponsorship situation.

In addition to artists from the region, street artists and musicians well known throughout Germany and internationally also came to Datteln, such as B. Mickie Krause , Brings , Torch Michael , Stoppok or the band of the former DSDS candidate Max Buskohl, Empty Trash .
The atmospheric highlight for most of the visitors, however, was a lantern parade on Saturday evening with self-made boats from the Datteln water sports clubs, followed by fireworks.
Trivia
- For 2014 the canal festival had a new mascot; a hippopotamus named Pepe . The mascot Kanello , used since 1997, could no longer be used for legal reasons.
