Kangaarsutsiaq [ kaˈŋɑːˌsːut͡siɑq ] (according to the old spelling Kangârssutsiaĸ ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Aasiaat in the municipality of Qeqertalik .

location

Kangaarsutsiaq is located on the southwest tip of the large island of Saqqarliit . Aasiaat, the capital of the municipality, is 20 km to the northeast as the nearest town.

history

Orally it is said that the people of Kangaarsutsiaq often went to Nuuk to celebrate big festivals. This must have happened a long time ago, however, as Kangaarsutsiaq was not inhabited until well into the colonial era. It is known that around three dozen people lived on the nearby islands of Illutalik and Tupertalik around 1800. Kangaarsutsiaq was first mentioned in 1829 when 19 people lived there. Two years later the place was given up again. It was not until the winter of 1847/48 that people came to Kangaarsutsiaq again to catch yarn.

In 1915, 52 people lived in the village, which was part of the Manermiut community . The school chapel from 1907 was a half-timbered building with a peat wall facade and roofing felt. There was a catechist and a midwife and 17 hunters in the village. In 1930 only 17 people lived in Kangaarsutsiaq and in 1933 the place was given up.
