Maniitsoq [ maˈniːt͡sɔq ] (according to the old spelling Manîtsoĸ ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Aasiaat in the municipality of Qeqertalik .

location

Maniitsoq is located on a large island of the same name , which forms the northern end of the archipelago in the district and extends into Disko Bay. Kitsissuarsuit is 15 km to the northwest and Aasiaat, the commune capital, is 6 km south .

history

Maniitsoq has long been inhabited and ancient ruins can be found in the area. In the 18th century, many Greenlanders lived here, who made their living from hunting beluga whales and harp seals . In 1785/86 the entire population fell victim to an epidemic. In 1794 the place was again inhabited by 28 people. In 1805 it had 43 inhabitants, but three years later it was abandoned. In 1812 Carl Ludwig Giesecke visited the island. In the 1820s people lived in Maniitsoq again, but in 1829 the place was deserted again. The place was not repopulated until the second half of the 19th century.

In 1915, 57 people lived in eight houses at the residential area. There were 16 hunters in the village, one of whom also worked as a catechist. Some of the hunters worked on the side in Aasiaat in order to survive. Some of the women were considered good weavers and seamstresses. The population ranged from 43 to 57 people until 1943, before falling more sharply. In 1952 the last 16 residents left the residential area.

Until 1950 Maniitsoq was the only other place in the municipality of Egedesminde. During the subsequent administrative reform, the residential area became part of the municipality of Aasiaat , but was abandoned only a year later.
