Killiit [ kiˈɬːiːtˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Kitdlît ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Aasiaat in the municipality of Qeqertalik .

location

Killiit is located on the main island of an archipelago of the same name in Davis Strait, far away from the other islands in the district and 28 km west-southwest of Aasiaat .

history

Killiit was settled before the colonial era. In 1750 consideration was given to building a lodge in Killiit. In 1778 a plant was to be founded, which also did not happen. The place was well suited for whaling and when the place died out after the great epidemic in 1786, the colony lost a lot of income. Therefore, attempts were made to repopulate the place quickly, but only succeeded in 1794. A whaling attempt was started and a year later 90 people were living in Killiit again. Although the yields from whaling were initially poor, the place was able to survive because of the good seal yield. Shortly thereafter, Killiit was raised to the status of a plant that produced good yields. A large part of the population died in the smallpox epidemic in 1800, but many people moved there and so in 1805 81 again and in 1808 93 people lived in Killiit. Due to the war, the facility was abandoned, but was re-established in 1818. In 1821 Killiit had 55 inhabitants. The whaling became more and more unsuccessful and so the facility was finally abandoned in 1823. In 1829 the place was uninhabited, but people soon moved in again and so Killiit was named Udsted in 1845 . As early as 1847 the place was downgraded to a residential area again.

In 1915 104 people lived in ten houses in Killiit. The school chapel from 1907 was a half-timbered building with a peat wall facade and roofing felt. A catechist and a midwife worked in Killiit. The 22 hunters were considered extremely capable and the women were also described as capable furriers. In 1924 a bacon house was built and in 1927 a new school chapel. In addition, a combined building consisting of a shop and a packing house was built, as well as several fish houses, which in 1952 totaled 310 m², but the yield in that year was rather low at 67 t with 24 hunters. Between 1940 and 1960, 100 to 124 people lived in Killiit. In 1960 Killiit received the Udsted status of Manermiut , but in 1967 the place was given up.

Killiit was part of the Manermiut community within the colonial district of Egedesminde . In 1950, Killiit became part of the municipality of Aasiaat .
