Nivaaq [ niˈvɑːq ] (according to the old spelling Nivâĸ ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Aasiaat in the municipality of Qeqertalik .

location

Nivaaq is located on the south coast of an island that is hardly connected to the east of Saqqarliit Island . A strait just under 50 m wide runs in front of the town, separating Nivaaq from the island of Ikamiut with the town of the same name at its eastern end, 23 km east of Nivaaq . Aasiaat is 21 km northwest , Akunnaaq 14 km north .

history

It is unknown whether people lived in Nivaaq before the colonial era. In 1791, Marcus Nissen Myhlenphort had a large house built here, where he let some people live in autumn and winter to catch yarn. Initially the catch was brought to Aasiaat, but in 1798 a bacon house was built from driftwood and peat walls. The smallpox epidemic of 1800 made the place extinct. In 1803 yarn fishing was resumed and in 1808 twelve Greenlanders and one Danish carpenter lived in Nivaaq. Shortly afterwards the place was abandoned again. In 1821 eight people lived in Nivaaq and in 1831 thirteen. In 1847 Nivaaq was made Udsted , which included the Itillermiut residential area . A residential building and a shop and warehouse were built. At that time, 40 people lived in Nivaaq. In 1903 Nivaaq lost its status to Akunnaaq and was downgraded to residential.

In 1915 30 people lived in Nivaaq. There were eight hunters, two fishermen and one catechist. In 1930 Nivaaq already had 80 inhabitants. In 1939 a depot shop was built on the residential area. In 1950 there were already 137 people living in the village. In 1954 Nivaaq received a new school band. By 1952 409 m² fish houses had been built, which were now used by 28 fishermen. In 1960 Nivaaq still had 97 residents and in 1963 the place was given up.

Nivaaq was part of the Akunnaaq community. From 1950 Nivaaq belonged to the municipality of Aasiaat .
