Nuuk [ nuːk ] (according to the old spelling Nûk ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the district of Aasiaat in the municipality of Qeqertalik .

location

Nuuk is located in the east of Saqqarliit Island . The Nivaap Sullua Sound runs in front of the village . The closest location is Akunnaaq 7.5 km northwest.

history

Nuuk was settled before the colonial era. In 1739 Poul Egede visited the town. Initially, the residential area belonged to the Christianshaab colonial district . Nuuk fell victim to the epidemic in 1785/86 and all residents died. At the beginning of the 19th century, the place was repopulated and in 1807 was added to the colonial district of Egedesminde. In 1808 Nuuk had 20 residents. Shortly afterwards, the residential area was given up again and only settled again between 1831 and 1850. Nuuk was part of the Akunnaaq community as a residential area . It is said that many people from Kangaarsutsiaq came to Nuuk in winter to celebrate great festivals.

In 1915 there were 53 people living in seven houses in the area. There was a catechist, ten hunters and a fisherman in Nuuk. The residents were rather poor and in 1918 it was proposed to move to Nuuk. It was not common for a place to be abandoned without asking permission, and it was announced in 1920 that Nuuk residents did not agree to their relocation. Contrary to common practice, Nuuk was given up because it was felt that the residents had no way of knowing their situation, and 50 kroner in compensation was paid for each house.
