course
It rises in the southern highlands of New South Wales and flows into the Shoalhaven River .
The river has its source in Budderoo National Park , around three kilometers northwest of the Illawarra Lookout . It flows first in a north-westerly direction to Carrington Falls , where it breaks through the western boundary of the Budderoo Plateau. The Kangaroo River then turns its course to the southwest and flows through the Upper Kangaroo Valley settlement and the small town of Kangaroo Valley into Morton National Park . There the river flows into Lake Yarrunga , a reservoir formed by the Shoalhaven River .
In the small town of Kangaroo Valley, the historic Hampden Bridge spans the river.
