The Kaniv reservoir ( Ukrainian Канівське водосховище Kaniwske vodozhovyschtsche ) is one of the six large Ukrainian reservoirs on the Dnieper and was completed in 1975. It is named after Kaniw , a town on the bank .

The central Ukrainian oblasts of Kiev and Cherkassy border the reservoir .

The Kaniwer reservoir covers an area of 675 km² and has a volume of around 2.62 km³ of water. The length is 162 km with a maximum width of 5 km. At the deepest point the water has a depth of 12 m. The lake is very shallow on the banks and silts up more and more.

The dam of the lake, built between 1972 and 1978, is located east of the city of Kaniw . A hydroelectric power station that went online in 1972 supplies the city of Kaniw and the surrounding villages with electrical energy. A single-chamber lock enables the reservoir through which the Dnieper river flows. The dam is designed as a large dike with a breakwater and a total length of 16 km. It regulates the water level of the river, which has risen by a total of 4 m due to the reservoir.

During the damming of the lake, many residents were forcibly relocated. Most of them moved into apartments in new prefabricated housing estates built by the Soviet state as planned on the banks of the dammed lake. The economic benefit is very controversial. Valuable arable land was flooded and resettlement from home towns was expensive and time-consuming. The capacity of the power plant is hardly sufficient to outweigh the disadvantages.

The rivers Stuhna and Trubisch flow into the reservoir .

Towns and villages in the reservoir (in the clockwise direction ): the southern districts of the Ukrainian capital Kiev , Kyjliw , Pereiaslav , Kaniv , Rzhyshchiv , Staiky , Trypillia and Ukrainka .
