Kanowna is a ghost town in the region of Goldfields-Esperance in Western Australia , Australia , the approximately 615 kilometers east of Perth and 20 kilometers northeast of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is located. It is a city that was formed in an Australian gold rush .

Surname

The area was first named White Feather in 1893; and when gold was found there, a settlement was established, which in 1894 became the city of Kanovna. Probably the name does not come from the Aborigines , because there is a cattle station on Cooper Creek in South Australia with this name and various sources report that the first prospector came from there. Kanowna could also come from "kana" or "gana", which in the Aboriginal language means either place where one sleeps poorly or cannot sleep . The area has a stony subsoil, which makes it an unsuitable place to camp.

history

After the gold discovery in 1893, the city was founded in the same year, which was inhabited by around 2,500 people in 1894 and 12,500 in 1899.

The city was in 1895 in the area White Feather misplaced, as there is a factory was built for the production of cement.

When the gold that was found in a floodplain was excavated, gold mining followed underground, although the gold veins are not superficial, but deep. As the gold finds decreased, the town became depopulated and the railway station was closed during the Great Depression . In 1953 the place was given up. Today, only the area of the railway station is recognizable from the city and two cemeteries and mines have been preserved. The Kalgoorlie Historical Society has marked the places where significant buildings were located.

The price of gold, which rose in the 1970s, said a renewed search for gold produced and as geologists came there by drilling on large gold deposits, which was mining in 1984 in the back open pit recorded since 2002 in the Kanowna Belle Gold Mine in three mines operated by Barrick Gold with approximately 300 underground workers .
