The Kapitelsberg on the northern edge of the Harz low mountain range is 452.2  m above sea level. NHN high elevation in the corridor of the city of Wernigerode not far from the district Darlingerode of the city of Ilsenburg (Harz) in the district of Harz , Saxony-Anhalt . Due to the distinctive structure of this elevation, the name Burgberg is also used, which indicates a castle that was probably built here in the 11th century.

Geographical location

The Kapitelsberg is located in the Lower Harz in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park . It rises about 1 km south of the Ilsenburg district of Darlingerode. Its prominent hilltop is predominantly forested with oaks, which are part of the oak coppice natural monument .

The Kapitelsberg falls steeply to the east into the Sand Valley, while the Haidknüll is in front of the mountain to the northeast . Both elevations are separated by the Jägertal, through which a marked hiking trail to Darlingerode runs.

natural reserve

On the Kapitelsberg there are remains of an oak peeling forest with typical flora. The earlier use of the forest can still be recognized there by some crooked and sometimes multi-stemmed oaks. The position under nature protection took place in 1973.

Opportunities for viewing and hiking

The top of the Kapitelsberg can only be reached on an unmarked path, which is also used by mountain bikers. Just below the summit, when the weather is favorable, there is a broad view over Darlingerode to the northern Harz foreland as far as Lower Saxony . The view in the other directions is severely restricted by the mountains.

history

In his 1983 work published in Harz Research , Friedrich Stolberg suspected fortifications in and on the Harz - from early history to modern times on the Kapitelsberg a hilltop castle from the 11th century. The historian Jan Habermann and the local homeland researcher Eberhard Schröder supported this thesis . The former initiated the establishment of a Burgberg working group in the Heimatverein Darlingerode e. V. at ,. who has since dealt intensively with the history of the Kapitelsberg.
