Kaplan is a city in Vermilion Parish in the southern US -amerikanischen state of Louisiana .

history

Kaplan was founded in 1902. Abrom Kaplan, a Polish immigrant and pioneer of the rice industry, is namesake and founder. At that time French was spoken there as most of the residents were Acadians . The rice industry that Kaplan founded there became one of the most successful in the region, owning and operating several locations in Crowley , Abbeville , Gueydan , and a few other locations on the western Mississippi River . In 1911 the Eleazar Theater was built. In 1916 the Kaplan Telephone Company was founded. In 1903 the first school was built and in 1920 it was completely overhauled. Grain, cotton, sugar cane, peas, watermelons and especially rice were grown by the settlers of that time.

Kaplan is 20 miles southwest of Lafayette and 10 miles west of Abbeville.

According to the 2000 census, 5,177 people in 2,069 households and 1,342 families live in Kaplan. 25.8% of the population are under 18 years of age, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% are over 65 years of age . The average age is 37. For every 100 women there are 86.8 men.
