description

Illustration of the caplily ( Veltheimia capensis )

They are bulbous plants that develop a leafless, flower-bearing, fleshy axis before they sprout up to ten basal leaves with slightly wavy leaf margins. The numerous flowers with a narrow corolla tube stand upright to horizontal in the bud ; they lower when they are fully open. The flower color ranges from pink to purple, the tips of the petals are green. The corolla tube can also be dotted green. Cape lilies bloom in winter.

Systematics

The generic name Veltheimia honors August Ferdinand Graf von Veltheim . Veltheimia belongs to the tribe Hyacintheae (formerly Hyacinthaceae family) in the subfamily Scilloideae within the Asparagaceae family .

The genus Veltheimia has only two species, the synonyms given are also used in horticulture:

  • Veltheimia bracteata Harv. ex Baker (Syn .: Veltheimia viridifolia Jacq. ): It comes from the eastern part of South Africa and is largely evergreen.
  • Veltheimia capensis (L.) DC. : (Syn .: Veltheimia deasii Barnes , Veltheimia glauca (Ait.) Jacq. , Veltheimia roodeae E. Phillips ): It comes from the drier part of western South Africa. It is seasonally green, so it has no green leaves in the dry season. The flowering time is from autumn to early winter. It needs full sun to bloom well.
