Kathlyn Mary Cooney (born March 8, 1972 ) is an American Egyptologist .

Life

Kara Cooney comes from Ireland on her father's side, more precisely from County Cork , and on her mother's side from Italy, her grandmother came from Abruzzo and her grandfather from Naples . She grew up in Houston and graduated from high school in 1990. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin . In 2002 she received her PhD in Middle Eastern Studies from Johns Hopkins University . At the same time she was working as a curator at the National Gallery of Art . She then taught as a lecturer at Stanford University and Howard University . She is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles .

She worked on two documentary series for the US television station Discovery Channel . 2009 for Out of Egypt and together with Zahi Hawass for Egypt's Lost Queen .

She took part in excavations in Deir el-Medina , Dahshur and Thebes .

With The Woman Who Would Be King. Hatshepsut's Rise to Power in Ancient Egypt she published a biography about the ancient Egyptian queen Hatshepsut .

She is married to television producer Neil Crawford. Their son was born in 2010.
