Karantaba and Karantaba Tenda (former name: Pisania ) is a town of historical importance in the West African state of Gambia .

According to a calculation for 2013, about 1907 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 1993 was 1437.

geography

Karantaba Tenda is located in the Central River Region in Sami District at an altitude of 11  m and is about thirteen kilometers east of Janjanbureh . The place is about 1.7 kilometers from the bank of the Gambia River .

The jetty on the shore is called Karantaba Tenda ( 13 ° 34 ′  N , 14 ° 34 ′  W ).

history

The African explorer Mungo Park stayed here in Pisania, as the place was formerly called, for some time in 1795 before setting off on his journey into the interior of the continent east to Niger . From July onwards he spent five months at the British trading post at the slave trader Dr. Laidley to acclimatize and learn the Mandinka language.

Culture and sights

Today the Mungo Park Memorial at Karantaba Tenda commemorates the beginning of his journey. The simple cement obelisk on a pedestal was erected in 1930 to commemorate the researcher.
